On Monday, June 6, 2016, Daniel Vander Wekken passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 85, at Garrison Green Care Centre in Calgary, Alberta.
Dan will be lovingly remembered by Margaret (nee Kuperis), his beloved wife of 59 years, and their children: Denise – Daniel, Paula; Len (Jen) – Jennifer (Jason Pardy) and their children Jeffrey, Alexandra, Jacob; Robert (Lorraine Henson); Katherine (Henry Denoudsten) – Allison (Mohsin Balouch) and their daughter Iyla, Erin Rae (Jarod McGowan) and their son Nash; Linda – Zacharie, Rebecca, Joshua; Christine (Steve Ottens) – Jesse, Kaitlyn.
He also leaves behind his sisters: Corrie Irvine, Nellie (John) Venhuis, Joanne (Joe) Barthel and Marie (Richard) Thompson, his brother Tony, his sister-in-law Grace, and brother-in-law George Reurink, numerous nieces, nephews and the extended Vander Wekken and Kuperis families. Dan was predeceased by his mother Catharina (nee Bolijn), his father Leendert and step-mother Elizabeth, his brothers Stoffel and John, his sisters Jenny and Sarah, his brother-in-laws Sonny Irvine and Lou Slomp, and his sister-in-law Ruth (nee Swanson).
Born on May 24, 1931 in Zierikzee, The Netherlands, Dan immigrated to Canada in 1949 with his older brother John. The rest of Dan's family followed a year later. His brother, Stoffel, remained in Holland. The family settled in Shaughnessy, Alberta, where some members of the extended family have continued to farm. Dan and Margaret were married on June 5, 1957 and lived in Calgary where they celebrated life together with their six children and extended families.
Dan was a great husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, son and friend to many. He will be especially remembered for his caring spirit, generosity and willingness to help those in need. Dan was a long-time delegate for Southern Alberta with World Renew (formerly Christian Reformed World Relief Committee), both a deacon and an elder with his church (River Park Church (formerly First Christian Reformed Church) and a founding member of Sonshine Community Services where he served for a time as Chairman of the Board.
The family would like to give special thanks to all of Dan’s caregivers at Garrison Green Carewest Centre. Thank you for your compassion, dignity and respect shown.
