Vold, Dagny (Danni) Sigrid (nee Hoberg)
December 14, 1927 – Provost, Alberta
July 13, 2016 – Calgary, Alberta

Danni Ulmer-Vold, loving friend, sister, aunt, mom, grandma and great-grandma passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at the age of 88 with her granddaughters, Paulette and Carla by her side.

Danni, the first born daughter and one of five children was born on December 14, 1927 on the family farm outside of Provost, Alberta to Elvina and John Hoberg. She was the only one of the five Hoberg children to be born on the farm, the rest being born in hospital. She has shared many fond memories of growing up on the farm, her mom being an amazing cook is one memory she often shared. Danni, also an amazing cook, had never been able to replicate her moms sugar cookies, but decided the secret may have been the fresh butter her mother churned. Like all children raised on the farm there were chores to be done, Danni was never fond of feeding the chicken and collecting the eggs, or the farm dogs but she loved the horses. She attended Luxemburg School #2583, which was three miles from home. The children would walk to school, but in the winter the cutter was used. During one particular bad stormy day Danni and her sister’s Lois and Janet were forced to take shelter in some bushes, but thankfully were found by the farm hand Charlie Brown.

After completing her schooling Danni moved to Edmonton and worked as a housemaid for a prominent Jewish family. A few years later, with a few of her girlfriends, she travelled to Vernon to work in the orchards picking apples. It was in Vernon she met the love of her life, Carl O. W. Ulmer. The happy couple were married on August 8, 1948 at the Skyline Lutheran Church in Provost, Alberta. They resided first in Vernon before moving to Red Deer where Sherry Lynn and then Loren Carl were born. The young family lived happily until Carl’s untimely death on October 18, 1954.

After Carl’s death, Danni moved back to Vernon with the children and lived with Kas & Walter Kastner. While in Vernon, Danni went to business school and worked for the City of Vernon. Danni’s next move took her back to Calgary where she spent the next 20 years happily working for Honeywell Calgary. She managed to save enough money while raising her children as a single mother to purchase a home in the community of Acadia. She learned to dance at the Arthur Murray Academy of Dance and became quite an accomplished dancer. It was here she met her second husband Ronald Vold. They married on December 28, 1968 and were together until his death in 1994.

Danni was a strong and independent woman. She learned to drive, took swimming lesson so she could go to the beach with her children and went to school so she could provide for her two children as a single mom. She raised three generations of children in the most loving, kind and caring manner.

Working in the kitchen is the strongest memory many of us have of Danni. She was so skilled in the kitchen, from baking cookies and apple pie to canning all our favourite cucumbers, carrots and many more. She was lovingly referred to by all of her grandson-in-laws as apple pie Grammy. Christmas time was an especially favourite time, Danni would spend hours upon hours baking Norwegian treats with her sister Janet such as flatbrød, lefse, krumkake and sandbakkels. The family waited all year to devour these treats and often they could be found in the freezer for a time after and enjoyed with Danni. As children, Danni’s grandchildren, Paulette, Carla, Shauna and Jasen, along with mom and dad would come over every Sunday for dinner. These were very memorable times and a few children always left crying because Grandmas’ house was the best place in the world to be.

Danni is survived by her son, Loren (Frances) Ulmer of Chestermere; her son-in-law David Seymour of Vermilion; her seven grandchildren; Paulette (David) Hillier of Calgary, Carla (James) Bell of Calgary, Shauna (Jim) Donnachie of Calgary, Jasen (Shirley) Henningsgard of Calgary, Brenda (Chris) MacLean of Edmonton, Garry Seymour of Vermilion, Donna (Travis) Domoney of Vermilion and thirteen great grandchildren, Chloe and Lainey Hillier, Colin and Eric Bell, Hugh and Grace Donnachie, Rydon and Ronan Henningsgard, Julia and Harvey Seymour, Morgan and Taylor Regier and little sister Daisy Domoney. Her brother Donald Hoberg of Leduc; and sisters, Janet Leacy of Calgary and Lois Wallace of Nanton, as well as numerous nieces and nephews - Lori, Bernie, James, Lorna, Brad, John, Shelly and all of their children.

Danni was predeceased by the love of her life, her first husband, Carl Ulmer; her parents Elvina and John; her brother Luther; her brother in laws John Wallace and Johnny Leacy, second husband Ronald Vold in 1994 and her beloved daughter Sherry Seymour in 2004.

Danni spent the last 14 years of her life living with her granddaughter Paulette Hillier, grandson-in-law David and great grandchildren Chloe and Lainey. A very special thank you needs to be given to them; they filled the last years of Danni’s life with laughter, happiness, family and companionship. They had a wonderful arrangement where Paulette would often cook and clean and Grandma would fold laundry and help with Chloe and Lainey when they were younger. As the years passed, Danni wasn’t physically able to do as much and Paulette stepped up to take care of her. Paulette lovingly cared for the woman who cared for her as a child. Thank you Paulette, David, Chloe and Lainey, you made Grandma very happy and proud and you did a wonderful job caring for her.

“My life has been my family and each and every one are precious to me.” - Danni

A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, July 20th at 11:00 a.m. at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd (13811 Deer Ridge Dr SE) with fellowship to follow. Interment will take place at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens. Condolences may be forwarded to the family by visiting www.edenbrookcemetery.ca. Arrangements entrusted to EDEN BROOK FUNERAL HOME, MEMORIAL GARDENS AND RECEPTION CENTRE, 24223 Twp Rd 242, Calgary, AB, T3Z 3K2.
