Carmen Jeanette Simon
Simon, Carmen Jeanette
Surrounded by her loving family, Carmen passed away peacefully after having courageously battled her many health problems these last few years. She is survived by her loving daughters Maureen (Lindsay) and Cheryl (Randy), her grandchildren Kerry-Anne (Adam), Bryce and Jacqueline (Ky) and her husband of 62 wonderful years, Peter. Born in Grande Prairie to Dr. H.O. and Jean Wilson, Carmen grew up in Spirit River, Lethbridge, Warner and Innisfail as the daughter of a country doctor. She received her RN (1948) and BSc. of Nursing (1950) from the University of Alberta. Upon graduation, Carmen moved to Calgary to be the first Industrial Nurse at Imperial Oil. It was here that a handsome young man invented an ailment just to meet the pretty new nurse. They celebrated their 62nd Anniversary in June. There were many moves for our family back and forth across the country with Imperial but 1968 brought us back to Calgary for good. Carmen loved to entertain and her fondest memories were of family and friends enjoying great food and company on their deck overlooking the water with the incredible sunsets and Dean Martin singing in the background. Carmen was a remarkable woman in many ways. She loved to dance, play bridge, attend the theatre and, of course, the Flames games with their No.1 fan (Pete) and was a knitter extraordinaire and an accomplished artist. She was active in the Samaritan Club for many years including serving for a term as President. She had an incredible flair for writing. Everyone always looked forward to her Christmas newsletter and her annual Nurses' Alumnae speeches showcasing her great sense of humour. She was a published author. Her book Stretch$Stretch is still pertinent today. And, Carmen, was a woman with a cause - always. Although her body failed her these last few years, Carmen remained so very sharp even weighing in on current events shortly before going to join her Father in Heaven. We will sorely miss her humourous approach to life, her great support and vigourous campaigning for many public causes and, most of all, her kind and loving nature and support for her family and friends. Many thanks to Dr. Shankel, Dr. Chan, Dr. Young, Dr. K. Lam and Dr. Simonette for their tremendous care. Many thanks, also, to the caring staff at Wentworth and dear Alena from Home Instead. Carmen loved a party. Please wear your 'happy' colours as we celebrate Carmen's life at Eden Brook Funeral Home and Reception Centre on Monday, December 8, 2014 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Clint Mooney and the Rev. John Crowdis presiding. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made in Carmen's name and accepted at either the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, University of Calgary, Room 1A10 HRIC Building, 3300 Hospital Dr. N.W., Calgary AB T2N 4N1 or, The Samaritan Club of Calgary, Suite 503, 1500-14 St. S.W., Calgary AB T3C 1C9.
