HOLM – Alfred David, C.A
January 19, 1925 – May 17, 2015

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our family patriarch: Alfred David Holm. Alfred was proud husband, parent, grandfather, great-grand father. Alfred was a quiet stoic individual with a fierce intellect. Dad was grounded by virtue of his prairie roots and the harsh economic impact of the Great Depression that he witnessed as a youth. His actions and leadership came from a deep place and were always founded by his intuitive common sense and by his uncommon wisdom. Alfred was born on the family farm located just outside of Weldon, Saskatchewan. Alfred was the only son of Iver and Anna Holm, who had each emigrated from Norway, only to meet in Canada and to start a new life on a homestead on the great western Canadian prairie of north-central Saskatchewan. Alfred only spoke Norwegian until he started school. Alfred was a natural student who accelerated two grades and completed high school at age 16. Dad always appreciated the benefits of a strong education. He left home for Winnipeg at 16 to attend Business College. This initial effort to pursue his studies was interrupted by the war effort as Dad joined the Royal Canadian Air Force at 17 and trained as a bomber. Alfred did not see action as the war effort wound down. Those who know the limitations of his eyesight view this as a good thing for the allied effort in Europe. Alfred’s time in the Services provided him with the opportunity to attend the University of Saskatchewan in the Commerce faculty. On graduation, Alfred became a Chartered Accountant and articulated and practiced in Saskatoon. In 1950, Alfred met a pretty young nurse, Dorothy Ruth Arnett, who supervised the urological nursing team at City Hospital in Saskatoon. In a life full of good decisions, Alfred made his personal best call when he asked Dorothy to marry him in 1952. The stoic Norwegian and the fiery red head enjoyed a great life together with their family of three children. The family moved to Peace River in 1956 and then to Edmonton in 1969. Dad and Mom remained in the same house on 97th Avenue until moving to Calgary in 2013 to be closer to family. Throughout his life Dad was an avid reader and enjoyed golf after retiring from the firm. Alfred was a true professional. He made a lifelong commitment to being a skillful, dedicated and highly ethical chartered accountant. He practiced for over 50 years for the same firm, now Grant Thornton. Dad will into his eighties and was still faster in basic math calculations than some very bright grandchildren. Alfred is survived by his wife, Dorothy; children, Catherine (Grant), David (Susan), Stuart (Elizabeth Eid); grandchildren, Elizabeth (Jason), Alex (Mikelle), Caitlin, Marcus, Matthew, Isabelle and his great-grandchildren, Maleah and Jack. These descendants will be among the many who will miss Alfred. The family would like to thank the wonderful doctors, nurses and staff at the Foothills hospital for their special and loving care and support for Alfred and our family during his recent illness. A Funeral service will be held in the Chapel of Eden Brook Funeral Home on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made in Alfred’s name to Renfrew Schools.
