Jackson, Shirley Annis (nee Eichenberg)
May 21, 1935 – May 26, 2015

Our beautiful mother and ‘Nana’ passed away after her 80th birthday while on a visit to Victoria B.C. Her vibrant personality, humour and grace will remain in our hearts. Shirley was born in Tillsonburg, Ontario to parents Lilyan (Rogers) and James ‘JC’ Eichenberg. She and her older brother Bill spent memorable summers at the family cottage at Turkey Point, Lake Erie. She met the love of her life, Paul Jackson, when she was 14 – the beginning of a partnership that lasted more than six decades. After high school, Shirley worked at a dentist office in Tillsonburg. She fondly recalled a 1958 road trip with her sister-in-law Shirley Eichenberg (Holland), when the adventurous pair drove to California via Missouri, Colorado and Nevada. Shirley and Paul were married and headed to Calgary in 1959 where they raised their two children and resided for the remainder of their lives. They returned to Lake Erie for many summers so their kids could experience the joys of cottage life with their relatives. Shirley devoted her life to her family. She relished being the matriarch, doling out memorable bits of wisdom to those she loved. Quiet philanthropy was an essential part of her nature, and her generosity enriched many lives. Her creativity knew no bounds whether inspiring her daughter’s love of poetry, nurturing the gift of music in her son, or baking themed birthday cakes for her grandchildren and cookies for the neighbourhood kids. Shirley was predeceased by her parents, and by her beloved husband Paul in September 2014. She leaves to mourn her daughter, Leslie (Greg) Fitzgerald and son, Craig (Sheree) Jackson; grandchildren: Liam, Quinn, Calen and Cydney; her brother, William Eichenberg and his wife Shirley, and sisters-in-law, Taye and Wanda Jackson along with numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends. Shirley’s family would like to thank the Neurosciences Unit at the Victoria General Hospital for outstanding medical care. Special thanks to hospitalists Drs. B. Vorster and D. Scott. We are grateful to her loyal family physician Dr. Katherine Savoia and cardiologist Dr. James Cohen in Calgary for their dedicated care over the years. At Shirley’s request, a private graveside service will be held in Calgary. If desired, donations may be made to her favourite charity, the Salvation Army, at www.salvationarmy.ca.
