Pauline Elizabeth Philip was born on February 22, 1925 at her parents’ farm in Tilston, Manitoba. She passed away peacefully, with family by her side, on Friday, September 23 at the age of 91 at the Rockyview General Hospital in Calgary, Alberta. Pauline was predeceased by her parents Matilda and George, and her brother Glen. Pauline is survived by her sisters Bernie Barbour and Ona Graham who will miss her spirited energy dearly.
Pauline left Tilston in her teens and moved to Winnipeg in 1942 to attend the Dominion Business College to complete her secretarial course. She did so well that Dinnen Agencies hired her even prior to her finishing her final exam.
Pauline’s first car was a 1952 blue Chevrolet nicknamed Nellie-Belle. She was very proud of her car which was a great source of adventures, camping trips and traveling back and forth from Calgary to Manitoba.
In the late 1950’s Pauline moved to Calgary to start working for Shell Canada where she stayed for 20 years working as an administrator. Pauline was a pioneer in the workplace changing Shell Canada’s female dress code. In 1974, Pauline was one of the first single women in Calgary to get a mortgage, again changing the rules for the better.
She had an amazing spirit and was always positive and optimistic. She loved spending time with her family and took a five month leave of absence to see her sister Bernie in Minneapolis and sister Ona in Malta. She had an open door policy at her house and welcomed many boarders, family and friends. She was very proud of her nieces, nephews and cousins and supported and shared their successes with friends and family members just as they were her own children. She was a dedicated volunteer with the Girl Guides for 15 years, and was fondly known as “The Cook From Batuk”.
Pauline was a devoted sports fan and always up to date with hockey, baseball, curling, and football stats. She often sported a Flames, Blue Jays, or Stampeders shirt in support of her favorite teams. She traveled to many Briers with her sister.
An artist in her free time, she enjoyed painting, sewing and crafts. She also took part in many community events at the seniors’ center. She took the time help anyone in need as a result of her big heart. She also had a soft spot for the barn cats which then became spoiled house pets.
Left to cherish Pauline’s memory are her sisters Bernie and Ona, nieces June, Lori, Kerry, Patti, Yvonne, and nephews Sean and Doug, and many great nieces and nephews and loving cousins. She lived her life to the fullest with enthusiasm and a positive attitude, and will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
A celebration of Pauline’s life will take place at the Thornview Seniors Room in the Thorncliffe Greenview Community Centre, 5600 Centre Street N, Calgary, on Saturday, October 8th from 2-4 p.m. A private family interment at the Tilston Cemetery will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Tilston Cemetery Fund c/o Michele Jones, Box 54, Tilston, MB. R0M 2B0. The family wishes to thank the staff at Chartwell Harbours, nurses and doctors at the Calgary hospitals and the many friends and neighbours who helped in times of need.
