HAWES, Michael Gardner (Mike)
May 31, 1942 – March 17, 2017

It is with profound sadness that the family of Mike Hawes announce his passing on Friday, March 17, 2017; with his devoted family by his side. Mike is survived by his loving wife, Jan Hawes, his son Kevin Hawes (Lynda) and his daughter Debra Zelisko (Troy), stepdaughters Heather Ramsay Conaboy (Sean) and Rhonda Gervais (Steve); grandchildren Haley and Logan Hawes, Weston Zelisko, Matthew and Jacob Conaboy and Dean and Dylan Gervais. Mike was born in Calgary to Joan (Gardner) and Harley Hawes. He was the great grandson of Captain and Mrs. Meophan Gardner who came and settled in the Pirmez Creek area west of Calgary in 1886. He was the grandson of Clem Gardner who rode in the 1912 Stampede and continued to compete in rodeo and chuckwagon races until 1946. Mike was raised on the Gardner Ranch, attended Springbank School then the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. After graduating he worked for a season in the Rogers Pass on avalanche control and then for the MD of Rocky View on the road building crew. After his grandfather Clem died in 1963 he returned home where he started a family and continued the tradition of his ancestors by ranching and building a large farming business. He was consistently a steward of the water and lands around him. He provided custom farming for over 20 neighbours until 2013. He was the president of the Pirmez Creek Irrigation Society from 1978 to 2013, involved in the community and the Jumping Pound 4H program. Mike was instrumental in the successful and timely construction and completion of a fabulous new playground at the Glamorgan Elementary School; that his grandchildren were attending and donated time, machinery and his skill as an operator for all to enjoy for years to come.

Mike was known as a gentleman, a trusted and respected neighbour ready to lend a hand and a loyal friend.
