HOOKER, Marlene Florence. Our beloved mom, Marlene Florence Hooker passed away peacefully on October 1, 2016 at the age of 71. Predeceased by her parents, Walter and Florence Curran; brother Albert and husband of 38years, Lloyd Hooker, she will be forever treasured by her daughter, Jody (Robert) Moore; son, Shane (Shauna MacDonald) and five beautiful grandchildren: Aidan, Victoria, Carson, Avery and Gavin. Marlene will be dearly missed by her brother, Leonard (Bev) Curran; sister, Verna (Doug) Berntson; and brother, Glenn Curran; her nieces and nephew; their families and her many cherished friends.

A hard working and selfless mother, grandmother, teacher, coach and mentor, Marlene lived a wonderful life full of family and travel. Born and raised in Moose Jaw, Marlene attended school, worked at the family Swing Inn restaurant and fostered her love of horses at the Spencer farm. After high school, Marlene attended the University of North Dakota then the University of Regina where she studied Business Education. Marrying her lifelong love, Lloyd, the couple moved to Sherwood Park, followed by Inuvik and ultimately Calgary where they settled and raised their family. Despite a short stint living abroad in Moscow, Russia and then Larnica, Cyprus, Calgary remained home for the past 41 years.

A farm girl at heart, mom loved working and puttering in her yard for hours on end. She had a great love for animals, especially her horses and beloved Labrador Retrievers. Discussions of her crop, her favorite sports teams and her grandchildren’s activities were always top of mind. As her grandchildren’s greatest fan, she inhabited hockey rinks, riding arenas, horse shows, soccer fields and basketball courts cheering on her grandbabies just as she did 30 years before with her own children.

Marlene will be remembered for her love and dedication to family, her laughter and fun loving, friendly demeanor and her insatiable love of hockey. Mom’s never quit attitude was foundational in all the challenges Life threw her way. Her strength, courage, compassion and love were unwavering and inspirational to those lucky enough to know and love her.

A sincere thank you to Dr. D. Hao, the staff of Unit 47 at the Tom Baker Cancer Center and staff at Dulcina Hospice for their care and compassion for our mom and our families. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you donate to the Alberta Cancer Foundation at https://albertacancer.ca. We'd also like to encourage you to hug a loved one! Dance! Laugh! Enjoy the time that you have!

A Celebration of Marlene’s life will be held at Eden Brook Funeral Home on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at 10:00 a.m.
