Schuster, Wayne Joseph
January 2, 1949 – January 3, 2016

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear Wayne. He passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his wife and children at the age of 67. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Jackie (nee Schnitzler) and three daughters, Julie (Romano) Cecchetto (grandsons Carlo and Dominic) of Port Moody BC, Marcie (Aaron) Tremblett (grandson William) of Lyalta AB, and Lisa Schuster (and Jason Tamplin) of Vancouver BC. He is also survived by his brother Gerry (Joanne) Schuster and sisters, Jeanette Orban (and John Surette), Darlene (Harold) Winter, and Corry (Dave) Hutcheon. Wayne was predeceased by his father, Frank Schuster in 1965 and his mother, Rose Schuster (nee Maierhoffer) in 1997.

Wayne was born in Outlook, Saskatchewan. He spent his early years in Aylesbury and then the rural Arbury area of Saskatchewan, surrounded by the beautiful sights, sounds and smells of the forest, hills and lakes. He then lived in Regina, near the airport and railroad tracks, which explains his love of airplanes and trains. His exploration of all the interesting rocks along the tracks spurred his love of geology. “I was always looking up for the airplanes and down for the rocks.”

Wayne received a degree in Geological Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan in 1972. He met and fell in love with Jackie on Boxing Day 1972 and they were married on July 26, 1975. He worked for four years with the Department of Mineral Resources in Regina. In 1977, they moved to Calgary where Wayne started a new career as an Exploration Geologist. After 38 years of working at a number of oil and gas companies, meeting many wonderful people and sharing his knowledge with so many, he retired in 2010.

The birth of their three daughters was Wayne’s greatest joy, and as a family they made so many special memories, including camping trips with friends and relatives, backyard adventures and vacations to Hawaii. He was so proud of all his girls and treasured sharing in every aspect of their lives. Wayne cherished his time with his grandsons, and loved telling stories and talking politics with his sons-in-law, family and friends.

Wayne enjoyed all kinds of music and played guitar for fun. He loved water, especially the surf and going snorkelling on his and Jackie’s many wonderful tropical vacations. He was a lifeguard and swam on his university swim team. Wayne has always loved the mountains. “Knowing about how they came to be, made them more endearing to me.” He had a deep appreciation for nature, enjoying frequent trips to the mountains with Jackie, collecting rocks wherever he went, watching the birds with his binoculars, whale watching in Hawaii, star gazing, working with his and Jackie’s plants and gardens, and going for walks in Fish Creek with their best dog, Rylee. Wayne was always busy around the house, whether it was building, fixing or inventing. He touched everyone who knew him with his enthusiasm, sense of humour, generosity, knowledge, and love of life. He showed a genuine interest in each and every person he met. He was exceptional.

Wayne was diagnosed with leukemia in 1992 and in 1998 had a stem cell transplant from his sister Corry. His positivity and determination over the years is a true inspiration to so many. We cannot thank enough all the wonderful doctors and staff at the Tom Baker Bone Marrow Transplant Clinic and Unit 57 for their care and compassion, and for giving us all these extra years together. To our family and friends, thank you also for all your prayers and support. “But most thanks goes to you, Jackie, who stayed by me through thick and thin.”

A Prayer Service will be held at Eden Brook Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. James Catholic Church (5504 - 20 St SW) on Thursday, January 14, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. If so desired, donations may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada, 804 - 2 Lansing Square, Toronto ON, M2J 4P8, www.llscanada.org
