Wissner, Ulrich F.G.
b. November 23, 1921 † March 6, 2014

On March 6, 2014 our Papa Ulrich (Uli) Wissner passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the age of 92 years. He was the second oldest of six brothers born to Friedrich and Emilie Wissner of Ebersbach-Fils, Germany. He was predeceased by his parents, and by his brothers Wilhelm and Eberhardt.
After serving as a paratrooper in World War II, Uli studied Geology at the Universität Tübingen and completed his PhD in Paleontology in 1958. The rugged terrain of Canada’s north was a land of adventure and opportunity for a geologist and Uli emigrated to Canada in 1958. In 1960 he returned to Germany to marry Heide and they came to Canada, settling in Calgary. Uli spent a lot of time in the early years doing exploration field work in Northern Alberta, B.C., Yukon and Northwest Territories. Uli and Heide raised three children in Brentwood and then on an acreage in Springbank overlooking the Rocky Mountains.
In his career Uli worked for Mobil Oil, Union Oil, Deminex, PetroFina and PetroCanada as an Exploration Geologist and later as Northern Region Exploration Superintendent. He was an Emeritus Member of the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists and a past Commissioner of the North American Commission on Stratigraphic Nomenclature.
Uli was a gifted artist who enjoyed sketching, drawing and painting, especially landscapes of his adopted country. He assembled a treasured art collection including many special Inuit prints and carvings. He was an avid reader and his home was always filled with books and journals, mostly on world politics, history and art. Uli loved the Canadian outdoors and he enjoyed hiking and skiing in the mountains well into his retirement years. He spent his later years tending a large garden, and caring for his dogs Thor and Kyla.
He is survived by his children, Hans (Susan), Silke (Kris) and Peter (January), his wife of 28 years Heide, his brothers Martin (Theodora), Volkmar and Friedemann (Gertrud), and many, many nieces and nephews. Friends are invited to Celebrate his life at Edenbrook Memorial Gardens on Friday, March 21, 2014 anytime between 3 and 6 pm. A living memorial tree with a view of Uli’s favorite mountainscape will be dedicated in his memory. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Uli’s name directly to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada (#100, 119 - 14 Street NW
Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6).
