Ramsay, John Taylor
November 15, 1940 – May 28, 2015

John Taylor Ramsay passed away peacefully at the Agape Hospice on Thursday, May 28, 2015 at the age of 74 years.

John will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 48 years, Margaret; daughters, Melissa (Brad) Wilton, Gillian (Martin Baur) Ramsay; grandchildren, Jacob and Jenna Wilton, Sophia and Luke Baur; siblings Sheila (Jim) Duffin, Peter (Eileen) Ramsay, Marie-Claire (Kevin) Leung as well as several nieces and nephews.

John spent his childhood in New Liskeard, Ontario. He carried the love of the outdoors and cottage country with him his entire life. John graduated from the University of Western Ontario, Honours Business, in 1963 and the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law in 1966.

While studying law he met and fell in love with the woman who would stand firmly by his side, Margaret (Copithorne) Ramsay. They married in 1967 and he began a life in Calgary. They shared a deep and profound love that built the foundation for their family.

John started practicing law in 1968. In addition to a few years spent as a partner with his wife Margaret at their firm of Ramsay and Ramsay, He was a partner at both Macleod Dixon and Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP over the course of his career.

John received the Queen's Counsel designation in 1998.
He was an Honourary Member of the Licensing Executives Society (USA and Canada), and was the author of two books on technology law. He also taught at the faculty of Law at the University of Calgary.

Along with his many professional accomplishments he balanced the role of husband and father. We remember him as the dad who took us out cross country skiing. The dad who was out in the field early in the morning to help us catch our horses. The dad who took us swimming at the creek (and would pull us up and down on our rafts). The dad who took us skating on the slough. The dad who took us out in the fields and spent hours telling us about the wildflowers.

In later years he developed an interest in photography and became an amazingly skilled photographer. He was often seen lying down in the field to get the perfect picture, often with grandchildren in tow.

He was so proud to become a grandpa and his grandchildren were the light of his life.

To us he was a man we knew stood firmly in our corner, loved us with all his heart and showed us how to live with honour and integrity.
A Celebration of John’s life will be held at Christ Church, 3602 - 8 Street SW, Calgary, AB on Thursday, June 4, 2015 at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, 1331 - 29 Street Northwest, Calgary, AB, T2N 4N2.
