The family of Gottfred (Fred) Hager sadly announce the passing of a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend on January 19, 2014 at Calgary, Alberta.

Fred was born in Burstall, Saskatchewan on August 25, 1924 and grew up in the Torrington, Alberta area. In 1951 Fred married the love of his life, Audrey, and they went on to enjoy 62 wonderful years together creating a lifetime of memories living in Bowness and Springbank. Fred and Audrey have enjoyed the fellowship of numerous great friends as dedicated members of the Bowness Lions Club and Springbank Heritage Club. Fred was decorated for his service to our country in World War II, and his lifetime of community leadership and contribution was exemplary. Among his many accomplishments in giving back, Fred was recognized as a Melvin Jones Fellow in 1999 by Lions Club Inernational. Fred founded, and for over 30 years operated, Interprovincial Drilling Contractors a business now being carried on by his grandson Tyler. Fred was widely recognized and well respected as a leader in his industry as a Founder, President, and Honorary Life Member of the Alberta Water Well Drilling Association. One of Fred's great delights was music; he would never pass up the opportunity to play the guitar or banjo and sing. He played in the Springbank Ramblers old time dance band into his 80's.

Fred was predeceased by Audrey in November last year, and his siblings; Lizzie, Bertha, Mary, Leonard, and Rosie.

He is survived by his loving family; son David (Kate) Hager, and daughter Donna (Cam) Crawford. Fred was a true family man and counted among his blessings his grandchildren and their families; Tyler, Carmen (Brian), Andrew (Ashly), Katie (Mark), and great grandchildren Shayden, Aleyx, Abigail, Quinn, Zachary, Darwin, Sawyer, and Rhys. Fred will be sorely missed by Brad and Donna Meyers and their children Terry and Laura who were very special people in his life. Fred is also survived by sisters Inez, Emily, and many, many nieces and nephews.

Many thanks to the caring and thoughtful staff at the Colonel Belcher who made Fred's life the best it could be in his final year.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the Chapel of Eden Brook Funeral home on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of choice.
