Francis Arthur Richard (Dick) McKINNON, FCA
March 5, 1933 – Delburne, Alberta
March 24, 2015 – Calgary, Alberta

A few talented people spend much of their lives quietly and effectively working behind the scenes helping others and solving problems – the consummate team player. Dick was a shining example of one of those individuals. In his professional life, enjoying a long and successful finance career in the Calgary community, Dick pioneered many novel corporate finance projects where his expertise was instrumental in the funding for TransAlta and Nova Corporation. He was a recognized expert in the area of regulation of electric utilities and natural gas pipelines. Dick was Past Chairman and Director of the Financial Executives Institute of Canada. It is not positions or accomplishments that stand out – Dick had a gift for bringing calm and collective thought to charged situations, finding sensible solutions while respecting everyone’s contributions. Dick was always ready to lend a hand to neighbours and family – helping with their taxes or an electrical socket in need of repair – he was always Mr. Fix It. An avid golfer and member of Canyon Meadows Golf Club, Dick was a regular with the Saturday early morning loopers. Dick spent many years as Treasurer and Board Member of Bethel Baptist Church and as an active member of Gideons International. A variety of community organizations, including the University of Calgary and the Foothills Hospital, counted on Dick to share his wealth of practical insight on various boards and committees.

His greatest joy was his family. Protective father and provider, devoted husband to his wife Lorraine (nee Lebsack) of 58 years, and integral to the lives of his children, Kenneth, David (Kaew), Karen and their families. Dick is survived by Lorraine and his three children and six grandchildren, Wilson, Sally, Dallas, Katria, Issa and Malik. Dick's spirit lives on in the enduring love of his family and memories of all the special moments with him, his quick wit and dry sense of humour, his joy in a well-manicured yard, and his ongoing teachings at the dinner table. Nothing can replace him in our hearts.

Dick did not lose his battle with cancer, but rather lived graciously and courageously with it until the very end when he passed in his home with his family by his side. A very special thank you to Dr. Scott Dowden, Dr. Barry Bultz, Dr Jeff Schaefer and the entire staff at the TBCC and the Palliative Home Care team whose care, advice and love went above and beyond and helped Dick in his journey.

Please join the family in celebrating Dick’s life at Eden Brook Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at 2:00 p.m.
