Dr. M. Tim Lavens
April 2, 1945 – January 5, 2017

The family is saddened to announce the passing their father, husband, and grandpa, after the bravest battle with cancer ever witnessed. Dad (Tim), was an absolutely exceptional athlete, scholar, and father. He grew up on his family farm in Jerome Idaho, and played NCAA division 1 football, as a talented offensive back and tight end for the University of Idaho Vandals. He shattered numerous High School football records, including the longest field goal ever kicked by a high school athlete. That record stood unbroken until 2003. He also broke numerous NCAA Big Sky conference football records and in 1967 he graduated Summa Cum Laude with his degree in Animal Biology and Agriculture.

He was drafted to the NFL by the New Orleans Saints. The Dallas Cowboys then approached the Saints, trying to actively pursue him in 1967, however Tim decided to pursue his academic passion, and was accepted to medical school at the University of Alberta in Canada (Graduate with honors), with the dream of continuing to play professional football while in medical school. The NFL allowed him to waive his NFL draft, and he was picked up by the Edmonton Eskimos, where he played tight end, during medical school. He practiced emergency medicine in Calgary full time and family practice in Beiseker Alberta part time for 45 years. He was one of the first certified emergency medicine physicians in Canada. He was also a licensed Stock Broker, and achieved the highest ever score, on the CSE exam (Canadian Securities Exam) in 1979.

He was eccentric, loved by all and a remarkable man overall. His 5 children were always so proud of their dad. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; five children: Trent (Edmonton AB), Todd (Brantford ON), Trevor (Superior CO), Nate (Lethbridge AB), Melissa (Denver CO); ten grandchildren (Rachel, Jessica, Connor, Molly, Caroline, Gillian, Vivian, Piers, Kian and Lucas, and by his sister, Jackie, who still lives on the original family farm in Jerome Idaho. A Celebration of his Life will take place at Eden Brook Funeral Home on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at 10:00 a.m.
