SPENCER, Catherine Mary (nee Hampton)
November 29, 1962 – January 19, 2016

Cathy passed into the hands of her Lord on January 19th. She was surrounded by her loving family who had gathered together for her final moments, listening to some of her favorite music and reminiscing over so many good memories of Cathy’s remarkable life. She was very comfortable and peaceful and gently moved on to the next stage of her journey. While bittersweet, it was a moving and magical moment for all who were present.
Cathy was born on November 29, 1962 near Montreal, Quebec to her parents Edward and Joyce Hampton. As a child she lived in several different communities within Ontario and Alberta. As a young adult she set her roots in Fort McMurray and began a career in Information Technology at the Syncrude Oil Sands plant (of which she was very proud) where she met her husband Stephen. They married in November of 1993 and soon began their family. In 1995 the family moved to Calgary where she started to set up new roots and grow her family. Cathy embraced the role of full time mother until her two beautiful children were well established in school. In 2003, hoping for a good deal on a new car, Cathy decided to apply for a job at a new dealership opening near her home. When the only position available was as Sales Associate, despite knowing next to nothing about cars, she embarked on a career selling cars. Within two years she was recognized as one of the top Nissan sales associates in Western Canada, attending several “Club Excellence” reward gala’s across Canada. In 2007 she was diagnosed with Breast Cancer, which spread to her brain in 2008. While ending her sales career in its prime, she changed gears to focus on fighting this insidious disease, becoming a spokesperson and advocate on behalf of Metastatic Breast Cancer survivors. This took her to several conventions across Canada and the United States. While surviving beyond most expectations, it was complications of this disease that eventually took her from us. She would like to thank her long time oncologist Dr. Marc Webster at the Tom Baker Cancer Center who fought for her from the start to the finish, and all the other doctors, nurses and technicians who took such good care of her over the years, and finally to the wonderful and compassionate staff on Unit 47 in the Foothills Medical Center who managed her final transition so superbly. She would also like to thank Michael Spica and Lisa Lamont of the B.E.S.T Metastatic Breast Cancer support group and all the members, past and present, who over the years travelled this journey together with her, sharing their love and support.
She was predeceased by her father Edward. Left to mourn, but cherish her memories, are her loving husband Stephen; her children Mackenzie and Noel; her mother Joyce; her siblings Fred (Heather), Gail (Steve), Kim and Bill (Francine) and many nieces and nephews.
There will be a memorial service at Deer Park United Church (77 Deerpoint Road SE, Calgary) on Monday, January 25th at 2:00 pm, to be followed by a reception at the Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes, if so desired, may be made directly to the Tom Baker Cancer Center, care of the Alberta Cancer Foundation.
