Carl James Smith
March 18, 1950 – February 14, 2016

Surrounded by his loving family, Carl James Smith passed away peacefully Valentines evening after a hard fought battle with stupid cancer. He is survived by Velma, his wife of 47 years, children: Coleen (Jonathan) Auld and their boys Jeremy and Nicholas; Ian (Janice) Zapfesmith and their children David, Evan, and Megan; Darrell (Sydney) Smith and their girls Caprianne and Madison; as well as his sister, Ruth (David) Larrigan.

Carl was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1950 to Herb and Clara Smith. He met his wife, Velma, at a community event in 1968. They had a whirlwind courtship full of laughs and conversations, which put many miles on his dad’s car. They married in May 1969 and then again “properly” in December 1969. In 1982, expecting their third child, a “shot-gun wedding” was performed in Gretna Green, Scotland in a blacksmith shop as part of a tour.

Carl graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1972 with a BSc with Honours in Geophysics. Shortly after, he and Velma moved out to Calgary, where he started a long and respected career in geophysics. He worked for Texas Instruments, Mobil Oil, Canadian Superior, which became Mobil Oil, and finished his career with Exxon Mobil.

An avid athlete, Carl could be found golfing, curling, training for marathons or cycling fondos, or in the mountains hiking. He established the fine tradition of the Smith Family Death Hike, where he invited family members on “casual” hikes in the mountains and would modify the destinations en route to satisfy his insatiable curiosity of “what’s at the top of that ridge”?

Carl was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. A man of integrity, fairness, love, and a dry and hilariously witty sense of humour, he departed this world loved to no end by his family.
He spent his last days with his family by his side, assisted by the caring staff of the Foothills Country Hospice.

Carl will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

A Memorial Service will be held at Eden Brook Funeral Home on Monday, February 29, 2016 at 2:00 p.m.
Donations can be made in his honour directly to Prostate Cancer Canada (https://prostatecancercanada.ca) or the Foothills Country Hospice Society (http://countryhospice.org).

Condolences may be forwarded to the family by visiting www.edenbrookcemetery.ca. Arrangements entrusted to EDEN BROOK FUNERAL HOME AND RECEPTION CENTRE, 24223 Twp Rd 242, Calgary, AB, T3Z 3K2.
